The Hon Korean Restaurant "Quick" Review

I needed to satisfy my craving for some Korean food so I decided to try The Hon Korean Restaurant.  I was pleasantly surprised that this small establishment serves up authentic Korean fare. The lunch crowd packs this place and dinner time somewhat slower.  For those who are unfamiliar with Korean food, many dishes are pretty spicy.  The owner uses very good quality spices in her dishes.  Don't look for salt and pepper shakers here, there aren't any on the table!

Atmosphere:  Located in a small strip mall, the place is easy to miss, its like finding a gem in a not so great neighborhood. There are about 15 tables, 4 of which have a gas grill for grilling marinated meats, etc.  (Korean BBQ.) To sit at the grill, there is a minimum of 4 people required.

Menu:  The menu is traditional Korean.  Many dishes, soups, entrees, etc. are meant to be shared between 2 or more people.  For an appetizer, we tried the fired chicken wings w/ sweet and spicy sauce.  The wings were big, juicy and delicious. The appetizer was served with side dish accompaniments (kim chi, bean sprouts, radish, tofu skins, for etc.) our entrees.

Since this was my first time here, I played it safe and ordered Bibimbap (click for description)  Bibimbap is found in all Korean restaurants.  I was very pleased with the dish - it was spicy, traditional, and very satisfying.  Served in a very hot stone pot, one must mix the contents well and fast, to cook the egg and to combine the rice, marinated beef, vegetables, etc.  I didn't think I could finish it but it was quickly consumed!

My 13 yr old son, ordered marinated chicken (without vegtables ) in spice sauce.  Ms. Hyon uses 3 types of chili in this dish - the flavor excellent and spice level perfect!!  (If you are not used to heat, have her tone this down abit.)  This dish was also put away easily!

Service:  Good.  Don't expect your food to come out fast, all dishes are prepared as they are ordered.  The restaurant has Korean wines/sake if you would like to try them.  I would recommend this place if you would like to try something different - Korean cooking is unlike most Asian fare.

Recent User Comments - 04/24/2011

Here are a few recent comments on area restaurants.  Read more about by clicking the links!

Chicago Pizza & Sports Grille - Pizza was great, salads were fresh and good and very good beer and good looking ladies

Taste @ 645 Atlantic - Love the food! They can cater from 2 to 2000 with perfection! The Wednesday lunch is wonderful and the Art Walk Tasting is always fun with great food, wine tasting, art and music!

Taste won't be the best kept secret for long. Although they specialize in catering, they are open to the public for lunch on Wednesdays. It's more like a gourmet lunch at a very reasonable price. We look forward to our next visit.

Mezza Luna Restaurant - Cost should be #### not ###. Food is good, but very high end for pasta on the beach.

Pasta Market & Clam Bar - Excellent experience. The waitress knew the answers to all of my menu questions, and helped my daughter and I decide on what to order. We had our hot, fresh garlic bread in front of us in no time as my daughter enjoyed her sweet tea and I enjoyed my fruity Sangria. The child's lasagna did not disappoint and neither did my seafood combo in the white sauce. What a delightful surprise to find such picture perfect food in Orange Park! The seafood combo was not only beautiful, but was absolutely delicious and both meals gave us lunch leftovers for the next day-yum! One last word- cheesecake!!

Bayard Cafe - Terrible service, overpriced!! I had the Reuben and asked for swiss instead of the provolone, it was that cheap processed cheese and my Reuben wasn't even grilled, it was squashed in some sandwich machine and the meat was cold.  My co-worker got a BLT and she couldn't even find the tomato.  Ridiculas prices for crappy portions, if your going to charge as much as a deli, you need to give deli portions!  We won't be back!

Brickhouse Gyros & Subs - I would highly recommend stopping by to try out this new Gyro shop. Of course everything was cooked fresh to order, and the dining area was nice and clean. It took about 5-10 minutes to get my food, and I must say the Western Gyro was nothing shy of AMAZING. I've never had a gyro with too many variations from a classic style, but I was very impressed. I will definitely be back

Fela's Sports Bar & Grill - Fela's is the worst place I have been in years. The food is not good the service is poor and they dont open til 7pm what kind of place is this and what is they running there. Please bring the old Jackis seafood back
