Frech Pantry Review

Ever since moving here to Jacksonville, foodies have raved about the French Pantry.  I finally gave in and me and and my companions braved the waiting line that is ever present.  (They should really put an awning so people don't have to fry in the bright summer heat.)

Atmosphere:  The place is small and has a seating capacity of about 30.  I am not sure if there is any good time to go there without having to wait 15-25 minutes.  For those of you that haven't been there, the place opens at 11 am and already has a line going out the door.  Once you get in the menu is posted on chalk boards.  There is a wonderful selection of bruschetta that had its own board, and another with the main lunch items.  As you wait in line to order your lunch you will see the desserts on display.  When you put your order in, you can also order bread and any other items you will want to take with you.  Then you sit, and a waitress will bring out your food.  Because of the size of the place, it can get quite loud and the seating is limited.

Menu :  The food served here is a varied lunch menu with is varied, not necessarily French.  Before you lunch order comes out, you are served with fresh baked French Bread and Pesto Rolls with olive oil.
EclaresBruschetta_with_Tomatos_and_Buffalo_MozzarellaFor starters, we had the  Bruchetta with Smoked Buffalo Mozzarella cheese and I because they looked so good, I dug into the eclairs.  The bruschetta was excellent - the tomatoes were so fresh, the melted cheese was good but the bread very good!  I have a thing for eclairs and when I saw these in the display case, I couldn't resist.  They were excellent - the filling was creamy and plentiful but not overwhelmingly sweet.  You have got to try it because its one of the best I've ever had!

French_DipThe_Parisienne_-_French_Dip_with_BrieRare_Roast_Beef_with_Borsin

We had the French Dip, the Parisienne (French Dip with Brie), and the Rare Roast Beef with Boursin Cheese.  Several people I know rave about the French Dip.  It was good but I preferred the Parisienne French Dip version.  The au jus was good and not at all salty.  The best (for me) was the rare roast beef with the boursin cheese - the combination with the fresh greens and the bread was a winning combination.
Service:  Even though we had to wait for 15 minutes outside, once you get inside, things move pretty quickly once you put your order in.  The only thing that will hold you up are the patrons who linger about after eating oblivious to other diners waiting for a table!  In a place like this we should all share and be considerate.  The waitress was good and efficient despite the volume of people.
I would recommend this place if you have the time to wait and have a good fresh lunch.  Will I go back?  Probably but instead of being in a crowd and waiting in line, I will order and pick it up.

Looking for a Good Jacksonville Restaurant Guide?
Jax-Dining.com Is the Internet Site to Click On!
If you live in or around Jacksonville and are looking for a good restaurant to have a meal, then go on the internet and click on www.Jax-Dining.com.
The website is celebrating its one-year anniversary in June, and has already attracted more than 6,000 visitors a day.  At Jax-Dining.com, people are able to browse thousands of restaurants by name , neighborhood, cuisine, prices, and menus.    In addition to its search engine, Jax-Dining.com is unique because of its other content, such as independent restaurant reviews, weekly updates on restaurant activity in the area, and recipes.  The site also posts information and links to other restaurant sites, as well as on popular social networks such as Twitter and Facebook.
“When Jax-Dining.com launched the concept one year ago, we were not sure how people and restaurants would respond,” said Izzy Tahil, the creator and owner of the site.  “We knew that there were no other restaurant sites in Jacksonville that were as comprehensive or technologically dynamic as Jax-Dining.com.  We didn’t know if people and restaurants would embrace the concept,  but 12 months later, we’re proud to say that our website traffic has exceeded our projections.
“We are now receiving close to 200,000 hits a month,” Tahil says “and growing steadily.  Our goal has always been to provide our readers with useful information.  People have really spread the word and are helping us maintain quality content.  We also strive to promote all Jacksonville area restaurants, from mom-and-pops diners to multi-million dollar operations.  Every restaurant is listed on the website - whether or not someone can afford it,” he adds with a smile.
“We are the leading restaurant site for locals and out-of-town visitors alike,” Tahil said.
“In addition to the huge number of restaurant listings and our own independent reviews, restaurants and businesses can advertise on Jax-Dining.com.    If a restaurant finds it is not listed or wishes to place an advertisement, they should contact me by clicking on Contact Us at the bottom of the page.
“We are unaware of any other website, local or national, that is like ours,” Tahil says.  Our hope was to provide visitors with a one-stop website that they could go to and find everything they need, from the latest restaurants to reading suggestions on what to cook for dinner.  And so far, the website has done just that and will continue to add content to improve the user experience.”

Review of Azurea at One Ocean Resort

Atmosphere:  Located in One Ocean Resort @ Atlantic Beach, Azurea offers a close to perfect setting whether for cocktails or for dinner.  As you enter the restaurant, the dining room is on the left, and the bar/lounge area on the right.  Both take advantage of the views of Atlantic Beach with floor to ceiling glass.  Beyond that, a large patio with ample seating is available for patrons.  The dining room is not large and tables are set far enough apart that you are not part of the next tables conversation.  When we were there for dinner there was a larger crowd of locals than visitors.
Menu (Click here to view) Azurea's Spring menu offers a great combination of meat and seafood entrees.  They also offer a good selection of wine and a decent single malt collection.
Auzrea_-_App1Auzrea_-_App2For Appetizers we had the Baby Romaine Caesar, Lamb Meatball Sampler, and the Jumbo Blue Crab Cake.  The lamb meatballs were excellent - they were juicy and tender, and with the 3 different dipping sauces, every bite was different!  My companions raved about the crabcakes...one rated it as the best she has had in Jax (just about everywhere we go, she samples the crabcakes) and the other rated it 2nd after another high end restaurant in NYC.  For them to give such high praise is worthwhile trying.  After our appetizers, were were served basil infused sorbet to cleanse our palate...few, if any, restaurants here follow this tradition.  This small, yet telling, attention to detail  spoke of the standards one would expect in all high end gourmet restaurants.

Auzrea_-_Main1Auzrea_-_Main2Auzrea_-_Main_3Auzrea_-_Side3For Entrees we had the NY Strip w/ Creole Mustard Butter, Lamb Loin w/ Apricot Glaze, and the Fresh Catch of the Day 3 Ways.  Our sides were the spiced Steak Fries and Asparagus.  The NY Strip was prepared to specification and was delicious.  I opted for the Lamb Loin and was happy I did.  I love lamb and was a little worried that the sweet glaze might have been overpowering.  After the first bite, any apprehension disappeared.  It was very good - the glaze was subtle and accompanied the tender, succulent meat perfectly!  My companions, not big lamb eaters, commented that the quality was excellent - it didin't have a very strong "gamey" taste.  The Fresh Catch 3 ways (Grilled, Bronzed, and Battered) was also very good.  The fish was moist and well prepared and was enjoyed.  However, the sauce for each piece of fish was put on it.  It was pointed out that this dish would have been better if the 3 sauces were served on the side to allow application to individual taste.
Auzrea_-_Dessert1Auzrea_-_Dessert2For Dessert we had the Duo of Creme Brulees (Lavender scented and Vanilla Bean) and the Profiteroles.  For me, both Creme Brulees were good but I preferred the Vanilla Bean over the Lavender scented.  The lavender was very subtle but smelled great!  The macaroons served with the Cremes were a nice touch.  I'm a Creme Brulee fanatic (its pretty much the only dessert I eat) and these were among the best I've had in Jacksonville.  My companions shared the Profiteroles, and both agreed that the Key Lime Ice Cream combined with everything else were very good.
Service:  Very Good.  Two waiters per table and attentive.  .  Waiters were versed in the food and drinks.  Good selection of wine and single malts.  When I ordered my scotch "with very little ice" the waiter asked, "3 cubes?"  Needless to say I was impressed because anything more than 3 would water down a good single malt.
Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurnt for the ambiance, service, and of course the food!  Its a great dining experience so take the time to enjoy it!

The Hon Korean Restaurant "Quick" Review

I needed to satisfy my craving for some Korean food so I decided to try The Hon Korean Restaurant.  I was pleasantly surprised that this small establishment serves up authentic Korean fare. The lunch crowd packs this place and dinner time somewhat slower.  For those who are unfamiliar with Korean food, many dishes are pretty spicy.  The owner uses very good quality spices in her dishes.  Don't look for salt and pepper shakers here, there aren't any on the table!

Atmosphere:  Located in a small strip mall, the place is easy to miss, its like finding a gem in a not so great neighborhood. There are about 15 tables, 4 of which have a gas grill for grilling marinated meats, etc.  (Korean BBQ.) To sit at the grill, there is a minimum of 4 people required.

Menu:  The menu is traditional Korean.  Many dishes, soups, entrees, etc. are meant to be shared between 2 or more people.  For an appetizer, we tried the fired chicken wings w/ sweet and spicy sauce.  The wings were big, juicy and delicious. The appetizer was served with side dish accompaniments (kim chi, bean sprouts, radish, tofu skins, for etc.) our entrees.

Since this was my first time here, I played it safe and ordered Bibimbap (click for description)  Bibimbap is found in all Korean restaurants.  I was very pleased with the dish - it was spicy, traditional, and very satisfying.  Served in a very hot stone pot, one must mix the contents well and fast, to cook the egg and to combine the rice, marinated beef, vegetables, etc.  I didn't think I could finish it but it was quickly consumed!

My 13 yr old son, ordered marinated chicken (without vegtables ) in spice sauce.  Ms. Hyon uses 3 types of chili in this dish - the flavor excellent and spice level perfect!!  (If you are not used to heat, have her tone this down abit.)  This dish was also put away easily!

Service:  Good.  Don't expect your food to come out fast, all dishes are prepared as they are ordered.  The restaurant has Korean wines/sake if you would like to try them.  I would recommend this place if you would like to try something different - Korean cooking is unlike most Asian fare.

Recent User Comments - 04/24/2011

Here are a few recent comments on area restaurants.  Read more about by clicking the links!

Chicago Pizza & Sports Grille - Pizza was great, salads were fresh and good and very good beer and good looking ladies

Taste @ 645 Atlantic - Love the food! They can cater from 2 to 2000 with perfection! The Wednesday lunch is wonderful and the Art Walk Tasting is always fun with great food, wine tasting, art and music!

Taste won't be the best kept secret for long. Although they specialize in catering, they are open to the public for lunch on Wednesdays. It's more like a gourmet lunch at a very reasonable price. We look forward to our next visit.

Mezza Luna Restaurant - Cost should be #### not ###. Food is good, but very high end for pasta on the beach.

Pasta Market & Clam Bar - Excellent experience. The waitress knew the answers to all of my menu questions, and helped my daughter and I decide on what to order. We had our hot, fresh garlic bread in front of us in no time as my daughter enjoyed her sweet tea and I enjoyed my fruity Sangria. The child's lasagna did not disappoint and neither did my seafood combo in the white sauce. What a delightful surprise to find such picture perfect food in Orange Park! The seafood combo was not only beautiful, but was absolutely delicious and both meals gave us lunch leftovers for the next day-yum! One last word- cheesecake!!

Bayard Cafe - Terrible service, overpriced!! I had the Reuben and asked for swiss instead of the provolone, it was that cheap processed cheese and my Reuben wasn't even grilled, it was squashed in some sandwich machine and the meat was cold.  My co-worker got a BLT and she couldn't even find the tomato.  Ridiculas prices for crappy portions, if your going to charge as much as a deli, you need to give deli portions!  We won't be back!

Brickhouse Gyros & Subs - I would highly recommend stopping by to try out this new Gyro shop. Of course everything was cooked fresh to order, and the dining area was nice and clean. It took about 5-10 minutes to get my food, and I must say the Western Gyro was nothing shy of AMAZING. I've never had a gyro with too many variations from a classic style, but I was very impressed. I will definitely be back

Fela's Sports Bar & Grill - Fela's is the worst place I have been in years. The food is not good the service is poor and they dont open til 7pm what kind of place is this and what is they running there. Please bring the old Jackis seafood back

Thanks for your comments!!
